The Joyful 12 School Project with Wellness in the Schools improves the health of entire school communities:
Our Mission
The Joyful 12 School Project inspires healthy eating as a way of life for kids in public schools.
How
Through meaningful partnerships with cafeterias and classrooms in diverse communities, we work with schools K-8 to provide local, seasonal cooking and nutrition education. Our partnership approach drives systemic, long-term change, shifting the entire culture of schools.
Why
Over one-third of children under the age of 18 in the United States are overweight or obese. Children spend about 12,000 hours in school between kindergarten and high school graduation, making schools the ideal environment to shape their wellness behavior.
WITS Labs and the Joyful 12!
We accomplish these goals in two primary ways: 1) Wellness in the Schools (WITS) Labs are taught to all children of elementary schools K-5 two to three times during each school year by our chefs, and 2) parents, teachers, and staff members of those schools continue the cooking and nutritional education back at home with children by using their memberships to the Joyful 12® , Chef Hollie Greene’s online kitchen learning lab that helps families learn how to cook with children and teach them how to enjoy eating more fruits and vegetables every day.
- WITS Labs have three primary objectives:
- Children will make the connection between the recipes they learn in WITS Labs with menu items in the cafeteria.
- Children will understand the seasonality of local produce and the rationale for eating seasonally and locally.
- Children will learn basic nutrition facts.
Farm to school education that connects the 3C’s
Working with valued partners, school leadership, educators, chefs, parents, sponsors, and local farmers, the Joyful 12 School Project develops and runs programs that create a culture around local, healthy food education and cafeteria participation. By connecting the 3 C’s: the classroom, cafeteria, and community, we help connect children to where their food comes from, how to engage with new foods without fear, and how to make healthy choices that are delicious and nutritious.
