Just say Blueberry Bacon BBQ Sauce, and tell me if you don’t smile. The whole idea of this sauce is tasty summer fun. Just in time for prime grilling season, I’ve got a new take on a necessary sauce to jazz up your summer BBQ favorites.
Every summer, I dream of juicy ripe berries at the peak of their growing season. Trying to enjoy blueberries any other time of year just isn’t the same. When they aren’t truly ripe, a little sugar mixed in with them will coax out more flavors, but it’s not the same as a sweet summer berry that’s got just that perfect hint of tart and tangy.
How do you pick a great blueberry and keep it fresh?
- Look for blueberries that have a deep purplish blue color with a silvery frost (known as a “bloom”) and taut, smooth skin. Avoid containers with berries that are shriveled or moldy or that are still green (those are unripe).
- Berries are very delicate. Refrigerate them unwashed (moisture speeds decay) in their container or in a single layer on a plate lined with a paper towel, covered loosely, up to 3 days. If you want to freeze them, first put them on a tray in a single layer in the freezer. Once frozen, you can transfer them to a sealed container.

So what’s the secret of this amazingly berrylicious BBQ sauce? The beauty is in the simplicity of making it. We start with summer’s finest blueberries. We add a little savory kick with some high quality organic bacon cooked until crispy. And then we finish this sauce off with that tangy and sweet combo that makes any BBQ sauce a favorite with some agave, worcestershire sauce, and yellow mustard. If this sauce doesn’t give your grilled meats a salute this summer, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle.
- blueberries, 6 oz
- ketchup, organic, ½ cup
- agave nectar, 2 tablespoons
- yellow mustard, ½ teaspoon
- worcestershire sauce, 4 teaspoons
- bacon, organic, 3 slices cooked
- Wash blueberries, cook bacon until crisp, and measure out remaining ingredients.
- Blend all ingredients in a food processor or blender until smooth.
- Put in a small pot, cover with a lid, and cook on medium-low heat for 10 minutes, stirring periodically.
- Enjoy over grilled meats, especially pork.
